On March 5th, China's Volunteer Day and a day for the Chinese to commemorate Lei Feng - a well-known soldier who devoted his whole life to voluntary service, a ceremony was jointly held at Hero Plaza by the Guangzhou Social Construction of Ideological Infrastructure office, the Publicity Dept of the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee, the Guangzhou Municipal Committee of the China Communist Youth League and the Guangzhou Young Volunteers Association to promote English learning for Asian Games and provide voluntary services.

The ceremony was composed of a series of activities including the promotion of English learning for the Asian Games organized by the Municipal Government, the first issue of the book: 100 English Sentences for the Asian Games, English Saloon, a ceremony for municipal government officials to present the flag for the English learning voluntary team, volunteers' announcement on the promotion of English learning. In addition, there were voluntary services. After the ceremony, volunteers would visit communities, parks and other public venues to offer voluntary services concerning English learning. In the meantime, thousands of volunteers held various activities in all districts and counties to promote English learning for the Asian Games.

Also 120 foreign volunteers joined an activity for promoting English learning in Tianhe Park of the city's Tianhe district on Wednesday. According to the Tianhe Young Volunteers Association, citizens who want to improve their English could dial 3862 2206 for help.
