Another three ancient tombs belonging to the South Dynasty (420-589 AD) were excavated recently after a red brick tomb from the same time of period was found this early July located in the eastern part of Guangzhou on Huanshidong Road, one of the city's busiest areas. Of the four newly-found tombs, 3 of them have been cleaned up.

"The bricks of the tombs were of a high quality, with patterns rarely seen in Guangzhou area. The tombs showed a flourish of Buddhism and thoughts of citizens from a lower society at that time." remarked by archaeologists.

Apart from the ancient tombs, archaeologists also found a vault for collecting metal money and another two wells, all of them could date back to the Southern Han Dynasty (917-971 AD). The entrance to the vault is quadrate, 1.3 meters long, and 1 to 1.2 meters wide.

Thousands of lead coins were unearthed inside the bottom of the vault. According to experts, the vault was used to hide coinage during wars in ancient times, and this kind of vault from the Southern Han Dynasty has been found in Guangzhou for the first time.

"During the South Dynasty, Huanshi Dong area was used for tombs. It was not until the Southern Han Dynasty that this area became a busy part of the city," according to archeologists. Relics from different time periods show the evolution of the city's development in a vivid way
