The "Safety" campaign for better public security since 2006 has reduced registered crimes by 15.3% so far in 2007 than last year across Guangzhou, China, according to the municipal government’s report to an inspecting panel from national authority.

Governmental statistics (from January to August, 2007):
Crime cases: 52, 141
Change from last year: drop by 15.3%
Change of theft cases: drop by 8% per month averagely

Public security in some key communities:
Kuangquan (around Sanyuan Li): The registered crime cases decreased by 41% in 2006 than 2005 and further dropped by 54% in the first quarter of 2007; public sense of security soared from 15.3% to 51% according to a survey.

Liuhua (around Guangzhou Railway Station and Canton Fair complex): Only 443 crime cases were registered, down by 62% than last year.

Approaches:

Municipal and district governments invested 84 million Yuan (11.1 million USD) more and recruited 3,500 more as community security staff for public security. There are about 10, 000 staff members in total across the city, two for each community security posts, supporting police.

Money reward goes to those who report crimes. 238, 600 Yuan (31394 USD) is rewarded to 153 so far this year.

Security squads and offices are set up in some communities and even local organizations. They collaborate with police and city administration officers to keep social order.
